July 1,2006 is come and gone, Are you RoHS Compliant?

What RoHS services does TKG provide?

What is RoHS

RoHS - Restriction of Hazardous Substances - EU Directive 2002/95/EC: restriction on the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical or electronic equipment sold or used in the European Union after July 1, 2006. These substances are lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyls, and polybrominated diphenyl ethers.

For specific information on exemptions and general RoHS information go to

http://www.dti.gov.uK

What if I don't ship products into Europe?

It would appear that if you don't ship or sell products into Europe and your customers don't require RoHS or WEEE compliance, you do not have to be concerned. However one major fact affecting all products and components is as that most component manufacturers on or before July 1, 2006 are choosing to switch their products to be RoHS / Pb Free Compliant. Additionally the US (i.e. California) is considering similar policies as well as China, Japan and other countries.

What does switching to Pb Free mean to me?

Component manufacturers to meet the RoHS Directive and customer needs are taking one or more of the following positions:

  1. Convert all products to Pb Free and Discontinue Pb Products.

  2. Convert high volume production to be Pb Free while maintaining the low volume, longer lead time Pb products.

  3. Discontinue Pb products while not offering a Pb Free replacement.

  4. Other policies depending on market place needs and products offered.

What this means is that components now used in your products are changing or have changed to be Pb Free. Although, Pb Free Components require a higher soldering temperature due to the lack of lead, most Pb Free components are compatible with existing SMT / Soldering processes.  Certain components (i.e. BGA Integrated Circuits) may not be compatible with the new SMT higher temperatures.

How may RoHS / Pb Free affect my day to day design / manufacturing operations?

Some of the affects of RoHS are:

  1. Component shortages due to demand for RoHS parts,
  2. Components being discontinued,
  3. Incompatibilities with existing products, processes and assembly methods.
  4. The need to add or delete components from BOMs and Document Control Systems.
  5. Part Number changes, description changes, new requirements on Certificates of Compliance, RoHS Declarations, etc.
